It is a long, steam-driven train with many cars and compartments, some for dining or sleeping, others for sitting or storage. You don't know how you've come to be alone on the train. But you suppose that can't be true. It's just what the conductor at the station said as he helped you drag your heavy bags up the narrow train car steps.
